Domestic Heating Oil Spill, St Ives, Cambridgeshire


This rural property had an oil fired central heating system. During a delivery of fuel the tanker driver damaged the manhole containing the fuel feed line to the property. The feed line was ruptured and approximately 1500 ltrs of fuel lost to ground.

The fuel moved through the ground adjacent to the fuel line and entered the sub surface of the property causing a significant vapour problem in the building.

The property was vented using a soil air extraction system and where liquid fuel was evident it was removed using vacuum pumps.

Where possible avoiding significant disruption to the property, the soils were excavated and removed off site. Treatment was undertaken below the property using in situ chemical and biological treatment systems.

Throughout the works the residents were able to remain in the property with minimal disruption to their daily routine.
