The fuel line connecting the external heating oil tank to the heating system in the workshop was badly corroded. Following a delivery of fuel the increase in pressure ruptured the fuel line externally to the building.
Due to the location of the fuel line the spill went unnoticed until the whole contents of the fuel tank had drained from the tank, resulting in gross impact of the adjacent soils and spreading of the contamination into and below the fabric of the building.
An investigation was undertaken to determine the extent of the impact and the affected soils were excavated and removed to landfill. Investigations were undertaken to assess the impact to the building fabric and beneath the floors.
The in situ treatment of the contaminated materials below the floors was undertaken using an in situ injection system.
The building fabric was cleaned down using a combination of chemical and biologically active cleaning agents.
The fuel lines were re routed and replaced with higher specification materials..
